Full Moon (Harvest Moon) on 9/26/07

Here’s the full moon which is lighting up the sky this evening, casting crisp shadows on the ground and washing out almost everything in the sky (that’s why no other pics tonight). It still amazes me to look at the moon and realize that people have been there.

Here’s the sequence I had before but including tonights full moon.

September Moons

  1. Are you desaturating the pic to make it b&w? Because I thought the moon was pretty golden last night. And some of your earlier pics look a bit pink, so I wasn’t sure.

  2. The color of the moon varies most with its height above the horizon. When I took the picture, the moon wasn’t overhead, but was well above the horizon. The colors that are applied to the moon come from light being bent in the atmosphere. When the moon is directly overhead you are looking at it through the least amount of air (say 100 miles worth or so). When you look at it on the horizon, you are looking through maybe several hundred miles worth. That extra amount of air bends the light coming from the moon, diffracting it to produce the reddish hue that you see. On the first couple images of the moon that I’ve got this month, the moon was very low on the horizon (it set shortly after the sun) so that was the only point at which I could get an image of it. It appears further east in the sky at the same time each day – at 9:00 pm one night it might be due south, high in the sky, the next night at 9:00 pm it would be noticeably to the east of its previous position, moreso the next night and so on. So when I first was able to get a picture of the moon (on the 16th), it set around 9:30 from my viewpoint, but last night’s moon didn’t set until around 8:00 am today.

  4. Thanks Bob. I credit the equipment and the inherent beauty of the moon.
