Cygnus-The Swan on 8/2/08

I went to a star party at Orion Acres with the Barnard Astronomical Society. Orion Acres is a dark sky site – the skies are mag 6.2 or better and this was my first chance to use my equipment under such great conditions.

The evening started with clouds, but they were supposed to clear up and by 10:30 or so, they mostly did. As the sky grew darker and darker, the Milky Way became very bright and clear across the sky. By the time I left (around 2:00), it stretched from Cassiopaeia in the North to Sagittarius in the south. It was gorgeous. For the night, the shot of Cygnus, above was pretty much my best image. you can see the stars of the “Northern Cross” among the stars of the Milky Way. Unfortunately, before I could get any other decent photos (it took me about 30 minutes to get the thing focused), it dewed up and the pictures were fuzzy.

I had a great time and when I get a chance, I’ll post a couple more pictures from the evening.
